Troubleshooting: The GRIN API Integration Is Greyed Out and You Can't Generate a Token
You open the App Marketplace, go to turn on the API, and the GRIN API Integration is greyed out. Selecting it does nothing, and Generate Token cannot be used. This is common on accounts whose plan does include API access, which is what makes it confusing.
This article explains why that happens and what to do about it. If you are looking for the normal path instead, see Using the App Marketplace.
Why the Integration Is Greyed Out
API access is controlled by a setting on your account, held on GRIN's side. The starting value for that setting comes from your plan at the time your account is first created.
It does not change on its own afterwards. If you later move to a plan that includes the API, the setting stays at the value it was given when the account was created, so the integration can remain switched off on an account that is entitled to it. Nothing is wrong with your subscription, and nothing was missed on your side.
Note: This is not a permissions problem and not a browser problem. While API access is off, the integration stays greyed out for everyone on the account, including Admins, so switching users, changing a role or clearing your cache will not open it.
What to Do
Ask GRIN to turn API access on for your account. There is no self-serve setting for it.
Contact GRIN Support and tell us you need API access enabled.
Mention your plan, so we can confirm which API allowance goes with it.
We will confirm back to you once the setting is on.
After API Access Is Enabled
Once the setting is on, the integration becomes selectable and the token is yours to create:
Navigate to your Account > App Marketplace.
On the GRIN API Integration, select Generate Token.
Your API key is then available in the Integration Settings for the GRIN API, ready to copy.
The same key works for both the v1 and v2 APIs. Full detail on locating and rotating it later is in Finding and Managing Your GRIN API Key, and Integrating with the GRIN API covers what the API can do and how the two versions differ.
Note: Your request limit depends on your plan rather than being the same for every account. If you expect your integration to go past it, tell Support early and we can review your capacity with your account manager before you reach the ceiling.
