Using a Discount Code as a Variable in an Email
Yes. Every discount code group on your account is available as its own variable in the email editor, so a single email can carry a different code for each creator who receives it.
How to insert it
- Start your message in the email editor, the same editor described in composing emails.
- Select Insert, then Insert Variable.
- Choose the discount code group you want. Each group is listed as the brand name and the group name separated by a colon, for example Your Brand: Spring UGC Campaign.
What the variable prints
It prints the code that creator already holds in that group. It does not create a code at send time. If the creator has no active code from the group yet, the variable prints nothing and your sentence goes out with a gap, so it is worth opening the group's code list first to see who is covered. If a creator holds more than one active code in the group, all of them print, separated by commas.
How groups and their codes work is covered in understanding discount codes, and inside an Activation you can hand codes out to creators as described in assigning discount codes in an Activation.
Can you edit the variable list?
The list itself is built by GRIN, so you cannot rename an entry or add one to it directly. It does follow your data:
- Rename a discount code group and its entry in the list is renamed with it. Variables you already inserted into templates keep working.
- Create a custom property and it appears in the list prefixed with Custom. Setting those up is covered in creating custom properties.
- Create an affiliate link and it appears in the list prefixed with Link.
A separate list: the code pattern
Inside a discount code group, the Code Pattern field is editable and has its own smaller set of variables: random characters, first name, last name, the creator's social usernames, and your custom fields. Those shape the codes GRIN generates for each creator, and they are a different list from the email variables above.
